So my little Thing 1 came to me today to announce that he is ready for his own cell phone...OK, What?? He is only in first grade!!! He thinks he is so grown up! A cell phone would be handy..But, not yet! So the question is what age do you get a child a cell phone??

I agree that first grade is a bit too early for a cell phone. To decide when it is the right time depends on the child and the situation. I didn't give my daughter a cell phone until she was in 6th grade. There was no need for it before then, but as she hit middle school and started staying after school more, I felt it was important. One time she had to wait for me outside of the school as I drove home from work. What if I was stuck in traffic? I would not be able to call her to tell her I was coming, just late. And certain rules apply, which the school backs up. No phone usage during school hours. She cannot text me until she is on the bus on the way home. During school hours, she can use the school's phone to reach me. wow. long reply. sorry.
